Need a few more weeks in Thailand?
Since 15 September 2026, most visitors who enter Thailand without a visa receive a 30-day stay. If you need more time, you can apply once to extend that stay by 30 days at an immigration office inside Thailand. NomadNest handles the whole process at Chiang Mai Immigration, usually on the same day or the next working day.
Who can extend
You can use this service if:
- you entered Thailand under the visa exemption;
- your current permission to stay still has at least three working days left;
- you have not already extended a visa-exempt stay in the past 365 days (this is how Chiang Mai Immigration applies the rule in our experience);
- you are not in overstay.
If you already have an extension stamp from this or a recent entry, a second visa-exempt extension is not possible. In that case, look at a longer-term option such as the DTV or an education visa.
What we do
Before Immigration
- Check your passport and entry stamp to confirm you qualify.
- Take your photos at our office, or collect your passport and take the photos for you.
- Prepare the application form and all copies you need to sign.
- File your TM30 address notification if your accommodation has not done it. We only need your passport, and it is done on the spot.
At Immigration
A team member accompanies you to Chiang Mai Immigration and takes you through the counter. Your part is to bring your passport and sign the documents we have prepared.
Afterwards
You leave with a new stamp showing your extended permission to stay. We explain the new date and what your options are if you want to stay longer.
Timing
Depending on when you contact us, the extension is done the same day or the next working day. Please do not wait until your last day: we need at least three working days before your stay ends to fit in the photos, paperwork and visit.
Important
- An extension is not available once you are in overstay. If that has happened, read our guide on overstay rules and go to Immigration as soon as possible.
- Leaving and re-entering Thailand repeatedly on visa exemptions can lead to questions at the border. If you plan to stay for months, a proper long-stay visa is the safer route.
For a step-by-step walkthrough, read extending a visa-exempt stay in Chiang Mai.
Why use a service for a simple extension?
You can apply for this extension on your own. Many people still prefer to have it handled because:
- the photo, form and copy requirements change from time to time, and a missing item means a second trip;
- a TM30 receipt is usually needed, and many hotels and short-term rentals do not file it;
- Immigration queues can take a whole morning, while we prepare everything in advance so your visit is short;
- our team explains everything in English, Chinese or Thai.
If you are unsure whether you qualify, send us a photo of your entry stamp and we will tell you whether you qualify.

Questions clients ask us
How long is a visa-exempt stay now?
Since 15 September 2026, visa-free entry gives a stay of 30 days. You can apply once to extend it by another 30 days at an immigration office.
Can I extend more than once?
No. In our experience Chiang Mai Immigration allows only one visa-exempt extension within a 365-day period. If you have already extended recently, talk to us about a longer-term visa instead.
How early should I apply?
Contact us at least three working days before your stay ends. Earlier is better if a public holiday is coming up.
I have already overstayed. Can you help?
We do not take cases that are already in overstay. Go to Immigration as soon as possible; our overstay guide explains what to expect.
What if I do not have a TM30?
We can file the TM30 address notification for you. We only need your passport, and it is done on the spot.
Do I need to go to Immigration?
Yes, you need to attend with us. We prepare everything in advance so the visit is short.
