DTV Extension by Mail
Extend your DTV stay by up to 180 days without visiting an office. Post your passport to our Chiang Mai office; we return it in about 7 working days.
This suits you if
- You hold a DTV and want to extend your current stay by up to 180 days
- You live anywhere in Thailand and prefer not to queue at an immigration office
- You have at least 15 days left on your current permission to stay
- You have not yet extended during this entry
What happens, step by step
-
Send us your details
Message us photos of your passport data page, your DTV and your latest entry stamp, plus a recent photo. We confirm eligibility and send a quote.
-
Post your passport
Mail your passport to the NomadNest office in Chiang Mai and send us a photo of the tracking number or postal receipt.
-
We prepare and file the extension
Our team prepares the forms and handles the extension with Immigration. You do not need to attend.
-
Passport returned
We mail your passport back with the new permission to stay, usually within about 7 working days of receiving it.
Documents to prepare
- Your passport (original, sent by post)
- Photos of the passport data page, the DTV visa page and the latest entry stamp
- A recent passport-style photo
- Your current address in Thailand and a phone number
Extend your DTV stay without leaving home
Every entry on a Destination Thailand Visa gives you up to 180 days. Before that period ends you can extend it once, by up to another 180 days. Normally that means a trip to an immigration office, a queue and a stack of forms. With NomadNest you post your passport to our Chiang Mai office and we take care of the rest.
Who can use this service
The mail-in extension is for DTV holders who:
- are currently in Thailand on a DTV entry;
- have at least 15 days left on their current permission to stay when we receive the passport;
- have not already extended during this entry.
You can live anywhere in Thailand. If you have less than 15 days left, contact us straight away; an expedited request may be possible but depends on timing.
What you need to send
You do not need to resend the bank statements or enrolment documents from your original DTV application. In most cases we only need your passport, a photo and your contact details. Immigration may occasionally ask for additional documents, and if that happens we tell you exactly what is needed.
How the process works
1. Check eligibility first
Send us photos of your passport data page, DTV visa page and most recent entry stamp. We confirm that you are eligible and send you a quote before you post anything.
2. Post your passport
Mail your passport to our office using a tracked service. Our full postal address in English and Thai is in the guide sending your passport by mail. Send us a photo of the receipt or tracking number as soon as it is posted.
3. We handle the extension
We prepare the application and file it with Immigration. You do not need to attend.
4. Your passport comes back
We return your passport by tracked mail with the new permission to stay, usually within about seven working days of receiving it.
Things to keep in mind
- One extension per entry. After your extension ends, you need to leave Thailand and re-enter on your DTV to start a new 180-day period.
- Do not let your stay lapse. Overstaying, even by a day, leads to fines and can affect future applications. See our guide on overstay rules.
- Keep reporting. If you stay more than 90 days in a row, a 90-day report is still required, and we can handle it through our 90-day report and TM30 service.
- Carry a copy. While your passport is with us, keep a photocopy of the data page and visa page with you.

Questions clients ask us
How long can I extend a DTV stay?
Each entry on a DTV allows up to 180 days, and you can extend that stay once by up to another 180 days.
Can I extend twice on the same entry?
No. Only one extension is allowed per entry. To get a new 180-day period after that, you need to leave Thailand and re-enter on your DTV.
How much time must be left on my stay?
Send your passport while at least 15 days remain on your current permission to stay. If you have less time left, tell us immediately: an expedited request may still be possible, but it is not always available.
Do I need to send my original DTV documents again?
No. We do not need the documents you used for your original DTV application. Your passport, a photo and your contact details are normally enough; Immigration may occasionally ask for something extra.
Is it safe to post my passport?
Use a tracked service such as Thailand Post EMS or a reputable courier, and send us the tracking number. We confirm as soon as the passport arrives and return it by tracked mail.
Can I travel while my passport is with you?
No. You cannot leave Thailand without your passport, and you should carry a copy of it while it is with us.
Not sure which visa fits you?
