How DTV stays work

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) lets you stay up to 180 days each time you enter Thailand. Before those 180 days end, you can apply once for an extension of up to 180 more days. That gives you up to about a year in Thailand per entry without leaving.

The extension is an extension of your permission to stay, not a new visa. Your DTV itself stays valid for its full 5 years.

Who can extend

You can extend if:

  • You entered Thailand on your DTV and are still within your permitted stay
  • You have not already extended on this entry
  • You still meet the purpose of your DTV

Only one extension is allowed per entry. If you have already extended once, you will need to leave Thailand and re-enter to start a new 180-day stay.

Timing

Do not leave it to the last week. We ask that you have at least 15 days left on your current stay when you start. If you have less than that, we can usually still help with an expedited request, but contact us immediately.

If your stay has already expired, you are in overstay. Read our overstay guide and talk to us before doing anything.

What you need to send us

  • Photos of your passport photo page and the page with your latest entry stamp
  • A recent photo of yourself
  • Your passport, sent by post once we confirm your case

You do not need to provide your original DTV application documents again. Immigration may ask for additional documents in some cases; we will tell you if that happens.

How the process works by mail

  1. Send us photos of your passport pages and your photo so we can check eligibility.
  2. We confirm and give you a quote.
  3. You post your passport to our Chiang Mai office and send us the tracking number.
  4. We prepare and file the extension.
  5. We post your passport back to you, usually about 7 working days after we receive it.

Our guide to sending your passport by mail has the full address in English and Thai.

While your passport is with us

Plan to stay put. You cannot leave Thailand without your passport, and some hotels or banks may ask for it. If you have a trip coming up, schedule the extension around it.

After the extension

Your new permitted stay date will be stamped in your passport. Note it down. If your total time in Thailand passes 90 days, you also need to keep up with your 90-day reports.

Questions clients ask us

How many times can I extend on one DTV entry?

Once. Each entry on a DTV can be extended one time. To extend again, you need to leave and re-enter Thailand.

We ask for at least 15 days remaining. If you have less, an expedited request is possible; message us as soon as you can.
